About the Author
Swami Tathagatananda
is a senior monk of the Ramakrishna Order of India. He was initiated in 1945 by Revered Swami Virajananda, the sixth president of the Ramakrishna Order. Swami Virajananda received his initiation from Holy Mother, Sri Sarada Devi, the Holy Mother, was initiated into sannyas by Swami Vivekananda and became the first monk to join the Ramakrishna Order at Baranagore after the demise of Sri Ramakrishna.

After finishing his academic career, Swami Tathagatananda joined the Order in 1955. He was posted for nearly ten years as a lecturer and superintendent at the Ramakrishna Mission Belur College, adjacent to Belur Math. Every monk who joins the Ramakrishna Order must study for two years under the guidance of senior monks at Belur Math's campus. Accordingly, Swami Tathagatananda spent two years at Belur Math's training school studying scriptures. He was initiated into sannyas in 1964. For almost ten years, he worked in educational institutions at Bihar and Madras. For nearly two years, he was the head of Ramakrishna Mission's Baranagore Math. In October 1977, he was posted as the assistant minister at the Vedanta Society of New York and took charge of the center the same year after the demise of the senior Swami. He has lectured by invitation at the major universities of New York and Connecticut and participated in two international seminars held at Miami University.

Swami Tathagatananda is a prolific author whose works bring enlightenment to the receptive reader. His articles and books are published for the most part in the literary organs of the Vedanta Societies throughout Canada, the U.S., Europe and Asia. Swami Tathagatananda's books have been published in English and in the Bengali vernacular. In addition to Einstein, His Human Side (2008) and Relief of Tension, Depression and Anxiety through Spiritual Living (2007), his English publications include Glimpses of Great Lives (1st ed., 1989; 2nd ed., 1999, 1st reprint, 2003), Meditation on Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda (1993), Meditation on Swami Vivekananda (1994), Healthy Values of Living (rev. and enlarged 2nd ed., 1996), The Vedanta Society of New York: A Brief Survey (2000), Journey of The Upanishads to the West (1st ed., 2002; 2nd ed., 2005) and its sequel, Light from the Orient (2005).

Two additional major works in Bengali, Mahabharata-Katha and Ramayana-Katha, were published by the Ramakrishna Mission in Udbodhan. A collection of his essays in Bengali was also published in India. The author is currently working on several new books, including Meditation and Holy Mother and collection of his major articles.





About the Author
Michael Black
was born and brought up in Omaha, Nebraska. His father was a Plastic Surgeon and his mother is a Dutch baroness. He excelled in baseball and tennis, and is an accomplished guitarist. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a major in English and a minor in Comparative Religions. A fiction writer, he attained a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Columbia University and studied with such authors as Hannah Green, Carlos Fuentes, Nadine Gordimer and Ralph Ellison.

It was in New York that he became close to Swami Adiswarananda of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center. It was at the Swami's special request that he learn to chant Sanskrit. Mr. Black remained in New York for ten years, then moved to Encinitas, CA, north of San Diego, where he now resides.

This Bhagavad Gita translation was the effort of almost five years and is Mr. Black's first book published with Sarada Ma Press. Two more are scheduled: IN THE AD COURT, a novel, and a collection of stories.

Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986)
, nació en Inglaterra, en una acomodada familia británica. Luego que su padre fuera muerto en la Primera Guerra Mundial, Christopher con su madre se asentaron en Londres. Más tarde vivió en Berlín, Alemania, donde floreció su carrera literaria. Isherwood se mudó a Los Estados Unidos, donde se volvió un ciudadano americano, en Los Angeles, California, en el año 1946.
Negando su alcurnia, oscurecido por una controversial vida privada y hastiado de la guerra, Christopher Isherwood, encontró soláz para su alma en Templod de la Sociedad Vedanta, en Hollywood, donde se volvió un genuino colaborador literario de Swami Pravabhananda. Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986)
, was born in England in an upper-class British family. After his father was killed in WW I, Christopher and his mother settled in London. He later moved to Berlin, Germany, where his literary career began. In 1939 he moved to the United States. In 1946 he became an American Citizen, in Los Angeles, California.
Rejecting his upper-class background and tired of the war, Christopher Isherwood found peace at the Hollywood Temple of the Vedanta Society, where he soon started helping Swami Prabhavananda in his literary work. His curiosity for Vedanta took Isherwood to India, where he traveled to familiarize himself with its history and culture. It is this period of his life that found expression in his biography Ramakrishna and His Disciples.
Isherwood pass away in 1986, leaving a legacy of great literature.

M., Mahendra Nath Gupta (1854-1932), fue docente, director del colegio Vidyasagara de Calcuta, India. M. conoció a Ramakrishna en 1882, año en el que comenzó a escribir en su diario todas las conversaciones de Ramakrishna, describiendo lugares y personas presentes, con todo detalle. M., Mahendra Nath Gupta (1854-1932)
, was the headmaster of Vidyasagara's High School in Calcuta, India. M. met Ramakrishna in 1882 and recorded in his diary the visits he paid him. M. noted Ramakrishna's conversations and actions with detailed descriptions of places and people. After Ramakrishna passed away in 1886, M. was prompted by Swami Vivekananda and others brothers monks to shared Ramakrishna message with the public so he compiled his notes in 5 Volumes, entitled Sri, Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita. M. started a condensed translation of his notes into English, that later sent to Swami Abedhananda, at the New York Vedanta Society. Swami Abhedananda edited M's translation into English and published in 1907 as The Gospel of Ramakrishna. Later, in 1942, Swami Nikhilananda, published The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, a more complete version.

Swami Paramananda (1884-1940), nació en una prestigiosa familia de Bangladesh, India. Tenía sólo 17 años cuando se unió a la segunda generación de monjes de la Orden Ramakrishna. Se encontró con su maestro espiritual, el bien conocido Swami Vivekananda, quien le dio votos monasticos, convirtiéndolo en el más joven de sus discípulos monjes. Swami Paramananda (1884-1940), was born in a prestigious family of Bangladesh, India. He joined the second generations of monk of the Ramakrishna Order when he was only 17 years old. He met Swami Vivekananda who became his spiritual teacher and gave him final vows. Swami Paramananda was sent to work in America to assist Swami Abhedananda at the New York Vedanta Center. Swami Paramananda's work soon expanded to Boston where he establised a center in 1909. Later he founded the Ananda Ashrama in La Crescenta, California. The Swami started the first Vedanta periodical: "The Message of the East", which continued for more than 50 years. Paramananda also founded  two educational centers in Kolkata, India that are still functioning. Swami Paramananda traveled all over America as well as to Europe, giving spiritual practices, classes and lecturing until his passing in 1940.

Swami Prabhavananda (1893-1976)
, nació en India. Ingresó a la Orden Ramakrisha en Kolkata, donde recibió sus votos monásticos finales. En 1923 fue enviado a América, como Swami asistente en el centro de San Fransisco.  Luego de dos años de su estadía en Los Estados Unidos, estableció el centro Vedanta de Portland. En diciembre de 1929 se mudó a Los Angeles donde fundó, en 1930, el centro Vedanta más grade fuera de India: La Sociedad Vedanta de Hollywood con distintos subcentros, 2 conventos y 2 monasterios.
El Swami es autor y traductor de varios títulos sobre cultura y religión India. Autores de la talla de Christopher Isherwood, Frederik Manchester y Aldous Huxley colaboraron con sus obras literarias en diversas maneras. Como un último tributo a haber dado su vida para el resurgimiento espiritual de sus hermanos y hermanas americanos, el Swami dejó su cuerpo el día de la Independencia Americana, el 4 de Julio de 1976.

Swami Prabhavananda (1893-1976), born in India. Joined the Ramakrishna Order in Kolkata, where he received his final vows. In 1923 he was sent as assistant Swami to the Vedanta Society of San Fransisco in the United States of America. After two years he established the Vedanta Society of Portland. In 1929 he moved to Los Angeles where he founded, in 1930, The Vedanta Society of Southern California, which is even today the largest Society outside India, with subcenters, two monasteries and two convents.
The Swami authored and translated various titles on religion and Hindu culture. Christopher Isherwood, Frederick Manchester and Aldous Huxley coauthored books with the Swami and cooperated in his literary work in many ways.
As a tribute to his adopted land, Swami Prabhavananda passed away on the bicentennial of America's Independence, July 4, 1976.
